Solo [Challenge] Dungeon

I frequently create short video tips for people who are new to solo playing. These are prompted by questions from my patreons, members of my Discord, or just visitors to my website. One of the most frequently recurring tips or bits of advice I give out is about not playing everything. It is perfectly okay to skip over elements of a game that don’t interest you. For me, that is inventory management and shopping for basic equipment. I played one game where the combat side of the game was so detailed and gritty that I played all the downtime in great detail but then abstracted the combat into just a few rolls influenced by how well I was doing in the story up to that point.

Challenge Dungeon is a game that is built on the idea of skipping bit parts of your character’s day-to-day lives. The dungeon is where the excitement kicks in, so it jumps from the quest giver to arriving at the front door of the dungeon.

A Challenge Dungeon adventure is intended to last about 2hrs, start to finish. I found that soloing the game became a two-stage affair. I would spend one evening, about 2hrs, preparing everything, and then the second evening I would run the dungeon.

The preparation was a mini-game in its own right and just as much fun as fighting your way through the caves or corridors to complete your quests.

Challenge Dungeon also only has five levels for characters. Splitting adventures into two sessions gave me greater playtime with each character.

This is the approach that I will demonstrate in this booklet.
